Installation of a 100kW/200kWh Off-Grid Solar System for a Hotel in Comoros

Overview

Customers from Comoros compared several solar companies in Foshan and Guangzhou, China After visiting many factories, we were his last stop.
In 2023, ODM Solar to design and deploy a 100kW solar PV system with 200kWh lithium-ion battery storage for a luxury resort in Comoros, an island nation in the Indian Ocean. The project aimed to eliminate the hotel’s reliance on diesel generators, reduce operational costs, and ensure 24/7 power supply in a region with unreliable grid infrastructure.

Key Challenges & Solutions
Site-Specific Constraints
Challenge: The hotel’s coastal location exposed equipment to high humidity, salt corrosion, and occasional cyclonic winds.
Solution: Utilized marine-grade, corrosion-resistant mounting structures and IP67-rated solar inverters. Panels were tilted to optimize energy capture while minimizing wind load.

Battery Storage Optimization
Challenge: Ensuring consistent power overnight given the hotel’s high energy demand (air conditioning, kitchens, lighting).
Solution: Designed a 200kWh LiFePO4 battery bank with a hybrid inverter system, enabling seamless switching between solar, battery, and backup generators. Load analysis software prioritized critical circuits during low-generation periods.

Logistics & Local Workforce
Challenge: Comoros’ remote location caused delays in importing equipment. Limited local expertise in solar installations.
Solution: Partnered with a logistics firm specializing in East African ports to expedite customs clearance. Conducted hands-on training for 8 local technicians on system maintenance and monitoring.
Implementation Process
Energy Audit & Design
Conducted a 7-day load profile analysis, identifying peak demand of 100kW.
Sized the system using PV*SOL software to achieve 98% solar self-sufficiency, with generators as backup during extended cloudy periods.
Installation Highlights
Installed 200x 550W solar panels on reinforced rooftop and ground mounts.
Deployed 2x 50kW hybrid inverters and 40x 5kWh modular batteries in a climate-controlled storage room.
Integrated a SCADA system for remote monitoring and fault detection.
Testing & Commissioning
Conducted a 72-hour off-grid stress test, simulating full hotel occupancy. The system maintained voltage stability within 220V ±5%.
Achieved 100% compliance with IEC 62109 and Comoros’ renewable energy guidelines.
